- My path in the arts began with theater, ballet and modern dance combined with all kinds of needlework. Later, I added multi-media, fiber arts, paper work, beading, and nature sculpture. From 2005 to 2008, I started, taught and managed art programs at a pre-K and afterschool art program that combined recycling and community service through the arts. I am entering a masters program in project management, which I want to use in an arts environment. I am currently spinning yarn from a sheep fleece I bought at the National Western Stock Show and taking Depression-era embroidery designs to a more modern level.
- Tell us how you feel about arts education
- In 1970s Oklahoma, my elementary school principal took a big risk. She added art education to EVERYTHING we did. If a child showed interest in something, arts or otherwise, they were encouraged to stop their regular day and begin learning it right then. My 3rd grade teacher declared that I was a poet one day after I wrote something I really liked. I was given the "day off" to write poetry and extra time to devote to the art whenever I needed it. And that's just one example.
This approach to learning changed my life for the better and many of my former classmates are some of the best problem-solvers I know. Why? Because art makes us ask "what if" and that makes us better thinkers and happier humans.
